Minneapolis BlowerDoor with APT pressure gauge

The Minneapolis BlowerDoor for testing larger buildings

The German Energy Savings Regulation also requires the building envelopes of non-residential buildings like schools or nursing homes, administrative buildings, and production facilities to be airtight. The majority of such buildings are larger than 4,000m3 (according to the European Standard DIN EN 13829) often requiring several BlowerDoor fans for the testing.

The APT-System (Automatic Performance Testing System), with a choice of 4 to 8 pressure channels, allows you to conduct measurements with one or more BlowerDoor fans from your laptop just as easily and accurately as you can carry out challenging measuring tasks to analyse complex leakage paths within defined building zones (e.g. the evaluation of attics or annexes via zone measurements).

With an APT 4 you can record measurements with up to 3 BlowerDoor fans. The transported air volume then amounts to approximately 22,500m3/h. If you use an APT8 to connect up to 7 BlowerDoor fans, the air volume conveyed rises to approximately 52,500m3/h. Especially for testing large buildings, multiple-aperture panels for two or three BlowerDoor fans have been developed, so that they can be installed in one standard aluminium frame.

The measuring accuracy of the APT is extremely high, so that even slight pressure differences, e.g. in adjacent rooms, can be measured. This allows you to determine to which extent desired or undesired airflow occurs between different parts of the building. With the APT system you can also document the wind load on building surfaces.

The APT additionally features 8 analogue voltage channels functioning as data loggers for different sensors by means of which you can conduct a comprehensive building diagnosis. With your laptop you can determine important parameters for comfort level and air quality, as for example the carbon-monoxide or carbon-dioxide content (CO, CO2), the relative humidity as well as the inside and outside temperature. The APT also enables you to check the effect of night and weekend setbacks of heating systems quickly and easily by comparing the flow temperature and the inside and the outside temperature. In combination with the a-value  measuring system you can test the permeability of window joints following the European Standard DIN EN 12207.

Overview of the most important applications:

  • Automated BlowerDoor measurements with one fan and the software TECTITE Express
  • Air tightness testing of large buildings with several BlowerDoor fans combined with the data logger software TECLOG and the evaluation software BlowerDoor plus (from a maximum capacity of 22,500 m³/h at 50 Pa with 3 fans with the APT 4 to a maximum capacity of 52,500 m³/h at 50 Pa with 7 fans with the APT 8)
  • Building diagnostics with laptop and sensors (recording of pressure differentials up to 1,000 Pa and acquisition of parameters for comfort level and air quality)
  • Checking the temperature reduction of heating systems by comparing the parameters of the flow temperature and the inside and outside temperature
  • Performance testing of ventilation systems
  • Determining the permeability of window or component joints in combination with the Minneapolis BlowerDoor and the a-value measuring system
